Ocean City will host the 2025 Special Olympics’ New Jersey Area 8 (Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties) Track and Field Meet on Sunday, May 11, at Carey Stadium.

More than 90 athletes will compete in the meet in hopes of qualifying for the Special Olympics New Jersey State Summer Games.

The Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to staff the meet, including:

  • Escorts (to walk athletes from their staging area to the starting line or from the finish line to the awards area)
  • Timers
  • Recording
  • Entertaining athletes in the “Fun Zone”

Volunteers age 14 and older can sign up for morning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.), afternoon (12 p.m. to 3 p.m.), or all-day sessions (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). All volunteers will receive a shirt and pizza for lunch.

Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more by contacting Jackie Adams at 609-525-9304 or [email protected]. All volunteers must register here:

The parade of athletes starts at 9:45 a.m. and the meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 11. Most of all, spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer on the athletes in the meet.

“I’m proud that Ocean City can host Special Olympics events throughout the year,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “I hope you all get a chance to come out on Sunday and give all of these athletes a warm welcome and our full support.”
