What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

By focusing on personalized care, convenience, and strong communication and adding technology, telemedicine, and patient portals to make easy appointments and easy access to their health information and communication.

What are some of the keys to effective decision-making?

Understanding the problem and root cause, setting objectives, getting relevant information, and seeking expert advice. Identifying alternatives, looking for best practice solutions, weighing the evidence, selecting the best possible option, implementing and monitoring progress, evaluating outcomes, and learning from your failures to improve future decision-making.

How do you build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues and mentors?

Effective communication means being reliable and consistent, showing respect and appreciation, providing and seeking feedback, being supportive and collaborative, maintaining professionalism, being respectful, offering conflict resolution, maintaining networks, staying connected, being authentic, being patient, and staying engaged.

What continuing education or training initiatives are you currently involved with to stay ahead?

I was reading journals like the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Lancet and using medical databases like PubMed, up-to-date for latest studies and reviews, NIH.com, and Cochrane Library. I also subscribe to newsletters and attend medical conferences, workshops, and seminars. I participate in online CME activities to maintain certifications and online courses that use platforms like Medscape and/or Harvard Medical. I also utilize medical apps and digital tools like Epocrates and Medscape.

What methods or techniques do you employ to help set achievable goals and track progress?

I use daily, weekly, and monthly reviews to reflect on my progress. I hold myself accountable by using reminders and alerts to keep track of deadlines while staying flexible, reassessing and analyzing setbacks, and celebrating success. My motto is to focus on growth, not perfection, and to always stay motivated and realistic.

How do you handle difficult clients, customers, or coworkers?

Staying calm and professional by controlling my emotions and listening actively without interrupting. I acknowledge their emotions, use phrases like “I understand how you feel,” help seek clarity, show empathy and validation, and try to find solutions. I can also be assertive if the person is unreasonable and disrespectful while staying focused and documenting interactions. If need be, I involve a mediator and get advice from trusted people around me. This allows reflection and a learning opportunity to continuously improve communication skills and understanding of a patient's needs to be able to set clear expectations.

What do you believe are the most crucial qualities or skills a leader should possess, and how do you embody these qualities?

Having a clear vision for growth and being open to new ideas while being honest and transparent. Ethical behavior, fairness, empathy for others, social skills, effective communication, active listening to feedback and ideas, informed decision-making, committing to decisions, perseverance, being accountable, leading by example, encouraging and motivating team members, planning, humility, valuing others, mediating disputes, having a safe work environment, and diversity are all qualities a leader should possess. I embody these qualities in my everyday life to improve personally and professionally.

Can you share a specific example of how you helped a colleague or coworker overcome a significant challenge or obstacle?

When my colleague's son tragically committed suicide, I did everything I could to be there for him during this devastating time. I offered emotional support, a listening ear, and a shoulder to cry on. I understood that sometimes being there in silence was enough, continuously checking on him and his family, taking over some of his work responsibilities, and making sure his tasks were covered. I assisted with logistical needs, offering my assistance to ease the load of his family by offering flexible time off if needed. I also provided grief counseling resources for his mental and/or physical needs, and I was mindful of his need for space and solitude while making sure he knew I was there if he needed me.

How do you decide what to do yourself and what to delegate to others?

Delegating tasks that don’t require your unique expertise can be effectively completed by another team member and are essential for team development. Avoid overloading by defining clear objectives and expectations all while empowering your team members and always trusting but verifying. Be readily available for guidance to balance team members' experience levels, monitor progress, and reward success.

How do you motivate your team for outstanding results?

Align goals with the vision, communicate effectively, be transparent, offer constructive feedback regularly, and recognize both individual and team achievements. Praise in public and provide constructive criticism in private; create a supportive atmosphere; encourage a growth mindset; offer rewards; lead by example; be accessible; promote work-life balance; and support flexibility, such as flexible work arrangements. This allows to reduce team member stress and increase job satisfaction. Allow team members to help with decision-making, which gives a sense of ownership and responsibility. I also show empathy by understanding the individual needs of my team members and always follow through on promises and commitments. I make a point to celebrate results with top performers but also recognize everyone’s efforts to maintain morale across the board. Keeping them motivated so they can strive for excellence and continuous improvement is essential to being a successful team.

In conclusion, Dr. Parminder Jaswal continues to lead with a blend of compassion, integrity, and strategic vision. His approach to medicine and leadership not only enhances patient care but also fosters a supportive and collaborative environment for his colleagues. We thank Dr. Parminder Jaswal for sharing his insights and experiences, which undoubtedly inspire others in the medical community.
