Mayor's Message: Oct. 18

Mayor Jay Gillian

Dear Friends,

I want to remind everybody that I have a town hall meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, October 19) at the Ocean City Tabernacle. We’ll go over project updates, solicit ideas for the open space next to the Community Center and provide time for questions and public comment.

To address climate change, the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection plans to implement new flood elevation rules that could dramatically change building standards, construction costs, insurance costs, affordability of housing and much more. While acknowledging that climate change and sea level rise pose a true risk, Cape May County municipalities have asked the state to conduct a thorough analysis of all potential impacts before moving forward (see resolution).

These sweeping changes are moving forward without any vote or input from the state Legislature, and they would impact almost everybody in town in some way.

An informational link on all things REAL/NJPACT can be found on the Cape May County website: NJPACT/REAL. The link provided includes the most up-to-date memo/analysis provided by Lomax Environmental Consulting, flood zone maps, and a link for members of the public to post a public comment. The public comment period ends on Nov. 3.

The Ocean City High School field hockey team and the Ocean City Key Club have been raising funds for the Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club throughout the month. The students will present a donation check at halftime of a game that kicks off at 3:45 p.m. Monday (Oct. 21) at Carey Stadium. News media will be on hand, and I want to invite everybody to support this community event by wearing pink and filling the stadium. This tradition started four years ago to honor the team’s coach, teacher and mentor, Mikenzie Helphenstine.

You can demonstrate your support by getting a pink hair extension for a $10 donation. For additional information to support this worthy cause, stop by the Pink Hair table on Monday.

Family, friends, Ocean City Beach Patrol alumni and former students, gathered in Ocean City today to mourn the loss of Oliver Muzslay. Ollie was the OCBP captain in the 1980s and 1990s, a teacher, coach and community volunteer. Please join Michele and me in extending deepest condolences to the Muzslay family.

The weather forecast looks good for the Volunteer Beach Sweep, Porsche Boardwalk Reunion and HERO Walk this weekend. The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual Welcome Night is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Civic Center. Our Halloween events kick off at 7:15 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 24) with the 76th annual Ocean City Halloween Parade along downtown Asbury Avenue.

I hope you all have a great weekend.
