Mayor’s Message: May 21

  • News
Dear Friends, Memorial Day Weekend is almost here, and I want you all to be aware of the guidelines in place to protect the health and safety of everybody in town. As per the governor’s directives and CDC recommendations:
  • Please maintain at least six feet of space between strangers when using the boardwalk and beaches.
  • Avoid groups of 10 or more.
  • Look for hand sanitizer dispensers on boardwalk railings.
  • Masks or face coverings are highly recommended.
  • Masks or face coverings should be worn at all times in any building, while waiting in line, and when social distancing cannot be maintained.
Public address announcements and signs at beach and boardwalk entrances will remind everybody of these guidelines. Hand sanitization stations have been installed at regular intervals along the boardwalk. We encourage everybody to always have a face covering close at hand, but a complimentary mask will be made available to those who do not already have one at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace) and at City Hall (Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue). In deciding to open the beach and boardwalk, I recognize that adherence to safety guidelines will vary from full compliance to no compliance. I am also aware that the government has limited tools to compel full compliance – even with these common-sense measures. Though we will have police and staff on hand to help educate guests, many of the recommendations do not carry the weight of the law. That’s where you can help. Please take personal responsibility to follow all guidelines. And each individual must decide how much risk he or she can tolerate and tailor activities, such as visits to the beach and boardwalk, to that tolerance level. I’m confident that these small sacrifices will help us have a great holiday weekend and a great summer ahead. Warm regards, Mayor Jay A. Gillian
