O.C. Schools Superintendent Outlines Steps Against Coronavirus

  • News
Dear School Community: The Ocean City School District administration continues to monitor the evolving situation surrounding the novel coronavirus, now known as COVID-19. We are working collaboratively with our local health departments and following guidance that has been provided by the New Jersey Department of Education, the Cape May County Health Department, the New Jersey Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At this time, these agencies are recommending basic infection control and prevention measures such as, staying home when ill and practicing good respiratory and hand hygiene. Cleaning and disinfecting are also an important part of the broad approach to preventing the spread of any infectious disease. The School District follows a custodial cleaning protocol at each of our schools. Please rest assured that the School District is carefully monitoring this situation and following the advice of our local, state and national health organizations. We want to take this opportunity to remind parents/guardians, staff and students that no one should return to school unless they have been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours. Please note that the best ways to prevent infection continue to be:
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when ill and avoid close contact with others
  • Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and throw away tissues
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
This past week, the CDC publicly cautioned that this is an ever-evolving situation and that institutions and businesses should begin a conversation regarding the impact that the spread of the virus could have on day-to-day operations. Our School District has sought guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) regarding the potential implications COVID-19 could have on schools. If you have questions regarding your personal or your child’s health status, please contact your health care provider and/or your local health department. Thank you for cooperation as we continue to provide our students and staff with a safe and healthy environment in which to learn and work. Sincerely, Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathleen W. Taylor
