By MADDY VITALE A fire broke out at an older single-family home in the Gardens section of Ocean City on Monday. Firefighters responded to 321 E. Surf Road at 5:11 p.m. to find the fire contained to the second floor of the house. By 5:49 p.m. the fire was under control, Fire Chief James Smith said. He said one of the occupants and a firefighter were taken to the hospital for observation.
“The call was that the occupants were in the building and smelled smoke and noticed the fire,” Smith said. “They got everybody out and called 911.” He did not release the names of the family members in the house, but noted that it is their second home and they planned on staying for the summer. Real estate records indicate the home was built in 1927. The house suffered extensive damage to the second floor. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. “Everybody did a great job. It was all Ocean City fire companies on scene, as well as Margate and Marmora (fire companies) and Upper Township Rescue,” Smith said. “The Strathmere Fire Company went to Station 3.” Smoke billows from the house as Ocean City firefighters extinguish the blaze.
