Bay Avenue Construction Update

  • News
The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work is being done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Work for Feb. 17-21: As of Friday, the contractor will have installed PVC pipe, backfilled and temporarily paved from the southern end of the project on 31st Street up to a point about 150 feet south of 14th Street. The digging of a second tie-in pit has also started between Eighth and Ninth streets on Bay Avenue. The purpose of the pit is to provide access to the existing 20 inch and 12 inch DIP lines so that tie-in connections can be made. The pit will be there for approximately three months to accommodate the schedule for the completion of all other pipe work and the delivery of tie-in equipment (valves, wet taps, couplings, line stops). In the meantime, the pit will be secured with temporary fencing and covered with a steel plate. On Tuesday, one of the contractor’s crews will progress northward on Bay Avenue from the current stopping point, south of 14th Street.
Traffic: The contractor will not be working on Monday, Presidents Day. In the meantime, 31st Street is closed to traffic between Simpson and Haven avenues. Bay Avenue will be open to local traffic only from 18th to 14th streets until the construction work crosses 14th Street. Once 14th Street is crossed, Bay Avenue will be closed, except for local traffic, from 14th Street to Ninth Street. The contractor’s other crew will be doing work at the two tie-in pits. Intermediate School Activity: No work is planned on Bay Avenue in front of the Intermediate School during the week. See full project update.
