Mayor's Message: Storm Update

  • News
Dear Friends,  We are monitoring Hurricane Dorian as it moves northward. The most recent forecasts call for the storm to move well out to sea before passing by Ocean City on Friday and early Saturday, and we do not anticipate any major impact.  But I would like everybody to err on the side of caution and preparation. Under any circumstance, we can expect strong winds starting on Thursday and peaking on Friday night with gusts up to 40 or 50 mph.  Please secure construction sites and loose objects on your property and be aware that driving conditions could be hazardous.  The forecast also includes rain for Friday, and streets could see minor flooding, particularly in the hours around high tide at 2:55 p.m. Friday and 3:21 a.m. Saturday. Monitor conditions and be prepared to move vehicles from streets that typically experience flooding. At this time, there are no coastal flood advisories posted. But we will provide updates if they are issued.
The surf will build rapidly through Friday evening and swimming conditions will be dangerous. Please avoid the ocean as the storm passes. Rough surf will continue through the weekend as the weather improves. Remember to swim only at beaches guarded by the Ocean City Beach Patrol. See list.  As always, check on your friends and neighbors to make sure they are aware and prepared for the approaching storm. For Police and Fire Department emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 609-399-9111.  Warm regards, Mayor Jay A. Gillian
