Juneteenth Organization to Honor Black Community With Celebration

  • News
The third annual Juneteenth Celebration & Brunch – one of only a few events of its kind in the area – will be held Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ocean City High School. During the celebration, there will be photographs, documents, and other artifacts chronicling the African American community in Ocean City, and histories shared from families in the community spanning many generations compiled in a documentary video. Minority small business owners will sell items at vendor tables, including handcrafted jewelry, baked goods, original art, and clothing. The event will also highlight the importance of children by providing one student with a Juneteenth Scholarship Award. In addition, a donation will be made to the Cape May County Coalition Against Rape and Abuse. Eight elders in the community will be honored who have made significant contributions in diverse areas, including Mary Jane Granger, Philanthropic Leadership Award; Charlene Hemphill, Memorial Award; Daniel Lee Henry, Community Leadership Award; Bernice McClellan, Family Values Award; Tommy and Mary Miles, Business Leadership Award; Richard Tolson, Community Ally Award; and Reverend John T. Winters, Spiritual Leadership Award.
Sponsorship/donations for this year's event may be made via check (to Ocean City Juneteenth Organization) or PayPal (account: [email protected]). For tickets or additional information, please see www.ocnjjuneteenth.jimdo.com or contact [email protected].
