O.C. Happenings: Baby Parade, Pops Tribute Concerts

The Ocean City Baby Parade returns for the 110th time on Thursday, Aug. 8. The annual tradition offers a chance for parents to show off Ocean City’s newest generation. The parade features children (ages 10 and under) cruising the Ocean City Boardwalk in themed strollers, wagons and floats. It starts at Sixth Street with children finishing at the Music Pier (at Moorlyn Terrace) and all other entries continuing to 14th Street. Online registration is now open for entries: www.ocnj.us/babyparade. Participants also can sign up at the Welcome Center on the ground floor of City Hall at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue. Entry fee is $5 per child, and the registration deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Entries are open for bands, dance groups, cheer squads, special guests, community groups and businesses to participate. A special unit application is also available at www.ocnj.us/babyparade. Ocean City Pops Tributes The Ocean City Pops will "travel" across the pond to the United Kingdom on Sunday, July 28, for an evening that puts the spotlight on British composers, musicians and culture. The “British Are Coming” show will feature the songs of Elton John, the Beatles and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and classical composers such as Ralph Vaughn Williams and Gustav Holst. Show time is 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. On Sunday, Aug. 4, the Pops will celebrate “Jersey Boys & Girls.” The concert will honor iconic artists from the Garden State: Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Frankie Valli, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Lesley Gore and more. Expect such hits as “That's Life!,” “My Eyes Adored You,” “My Way,” “Alfie,” “I Will Always Love You.” Show time is 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. The Brandywine Singers, Chester County Pa.’s premier vocal ensemble, will join the Pops. JULY 24 – Broadway By Request: The Ocean City Pops provide a unique evening of musical theater entertainment spanning eight decades of music from the Broadway stage. 7:30 p.m. show at the Ocean City Music Pier. JULY 25 – Masterworks Choir Concert: The Masterworks Choir and the Chanteuse Singers will present John Rutter’s Mass of the Children in a free concert at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church (8th Street and Central Ave.) 7:30 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call 609-399-2988. JULY 26 and 27 –The Wedding Singer (The Musical): This production features Ocean City Theatre Company’s High School Junior Company. Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, “The Wedding Singer” has a new score that does for the '80s what Hairspray did for the '60s. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. JULY 29 – Jon Anderson of YES: Backed by an all-star band, Anderson brings his best tour to-date to Ocean City to perform the music of YES, songs from his new album, 1000 Hands, and much more. COMING UP THIS SUMMER JULY 30 – Children’s Theatre Series: How I Became a Pirate: The Ocean City Theatre Company presents a fantastic musical excursion based on the book by Melinda Long. JULY 31 – Wacky Wednesday - Mystery Bag: Participants will receive a brown paper bag filled with random supplies. The mission: Create an object, sculpture or unique work of art using everything in the bag. Contest is free. Limited to 150 participants. Open to all ages. Start time is 10:30 a.m. at the Music Pier. JULY 31 – Twins Contest: Prizes for those who look the most and least alike. Open to all ages. Registration is free and begins at 5:30 p.m. Contest begins at 6 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. AUGUST 1 – Sand Sculpting Contest: Registration is free and begins at 9 a.m. at the Sixth Street Beach for this informal family-friendly event. AUGUST 1 - 14th Street Fishing Pier Open House: The Ocean City Fishing Club invites the public to visit the privately owned pier 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. Visitors are asked to bring non-perishable food items or make a cash donation to the local Ocean City Food Cupboard. The club collected 82 pounds of food and $200 for the Food Cupboard at a recent Open House on July 18. Ocean City Fishing Club Pier at 14th Street will host an open house. AUGUST 1 to 3 – The 19th Annual Art of Surfing Festival: This free family event features original art from surfing's biggest names, live music, and a chance to meet artists from across the country. AUGUST 2 to 4 – 57th Annual Boardwalk Art Show: Leading artists from throughout the East Coast exhibit and sell their work on the Boardwalk between Eighth Street and 13th Street. Traditionally an ideal place to buy fine artwork at reasonable prices. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. AUGUST 3 – Ocean City Cars and Coffee: Exotic, classic and unique automobiles will be on display at this free event on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle (500 block of Asbury Avenue) 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. AUGUST 5 – Lou Gramm of Foreigner: Lou Gramm, the original voice of Foreigner, teams up with ASIA, featuring John Payne, for an exciting night of rock featuring all the Foreigner and ASIA hits you know and love.
