Ocean City Boardwalk Welcomes Walk for Wounded and Corvette Show

More than 450 Corvettes will take over the Ocean City Boardwalk on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual Corvette Show includes a range of models dating back to Corvette’s first in 1953 and extending to the present. The show is one of the largest on the East Coast, and the line of vehicles will cover the Boardwalk from Sixth Street to 14th Street. Due to the popularity of the event, it is now closed to new registrations. An awards ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in front of the Ocean City Music Pier between Eighth Street and Ninth Street. The Ocean City Humane Society also will have a display in front of the Music Pier. Volunteers will be selling items and collecting donations to support the award-winning "no-kill" shelter. Proceeds from registration fees benefit local charities. The show is sponsored by the Boardwalk Corvettes. For more information, call the club's hotline at 609-457-0081. Army veteran Sean Lewis, who lost his right leg during a mortar attack in Iraq, is joined by his girlfriend, Raissa Ross, during the 2017 Walk for the Wounded. The 10th annual Walk for the Wounded will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, on the Boardwalk. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Music Pier. A ceremony honoring soldiers is at 9:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The entire extended Ocean City community has always come out in full support of this important fundraising event. The three-mile walk on the Boardwalk begins and ends at the Music Pier. All proceeds benefit Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization that provides both financial and emotional support to wounded soldiers and their families. Platinum-selling, 18-year-old vocal sensation Jackie Evancho will return to the Music Pier for a Christmas show 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. She will perform a selection of songs from her critically acclaimed “Someday at Christmas” album. Her Christmas show is filled with classic Christmas and popular holiday songs. She will join musicians from the Ocean City Pops Orchestra to celebrate the holiday season in America’s Greatest Family Resort. Evancho dazzled American television audiences at age 10, gaining global recognition with her stunning debut on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Since then, she has released a string of platinum and gold albums with sales of over 2.5 million in the U.S., acted in Robert Redford’s “The Company You Keep” alongside Susan Sarandon and performed for President and Mrs. Obama at the National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington D.C. Her broad successes led Billboard Magazine to include her on its list of “music movers-and-shakers under the age of 21” in 2011 and again in 2012. Also coming up in September: The Great American Songbook and International Cabaret (Sept. 21): The Ocean City Free Public Library presents a free concert featuring the Sonny & Perley Trio. Show is 7 p.m. Friday in the Chris Malone Lecture Hall. MS City to Shore Ride (Sept. 29): With 7,000 cyclists raising $5.6 million, the event boasts that it is the best cycling experience on the East Coast. The MS City to Shore ride will end in Ocean City on Saturday, Sept. 29. The annual bicycle trek begins in Cherry Hill and finishes at the parking lot at Fifth Street and Boardwalk with many of the riders returning the next day. The event is a fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. For more information, 800-445-BIKE or visit www.mscycling.org Boardwalk and Downtown Merchant Table Sales (Sept. 29 and 30): Shop for fall discounts from Ocean City merchants between Sixth and 14th streets on Asbury Avenue and the Boardwalk. OCNJ Half Marathon, 5K and 10-Mile Non-Competitive Run-Walk (Sept. 30): The 9th annual OCNJ Half Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30. The event also includes a 10-mile non-competitive walk/run and a 5-kilometer race. The combined races included more than 1,600 finishers last year, with 985 completing the half marathon. Organizers expect a record field for all of the races this year. The increasingly popular event showcases Ocean City’s Boardwalk, downtown and neighborhoods with ocean views throughout a fast, flat course. The public is encouraged to come out and cheer for runners. Local “celebrities” are on hand, including Ocean City mascot Martin Z. Mollusk and the OCHS Red Raider mascot. Volunteer groups man “peppy” water stations and are judged for their themes. Music along the route provides a boost for all the participants. It’s not too late register for any of the events.
