Mayor's Update: July 13

  • News
Dear Friends, Tonight’s performance of “A Chorus Line” presented by the Ocean City Pops and Ocean City Theatre Company will be dedicated to the memory of Nancy Hughes. It’s fitting that the show will take place in the venue that bears her name: The Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center. Nancy, who dedicated her life to the service of country and community, passed away earlier this year. But her memory and legacy will endure. I’m glad to see her recognized this way and hope that some of you can make it down to see the show. The 500 block of West Avenue will be closed to all traffic next week as crews work to elevate and pave the roadway in front of the Ocean City Primary School. Detours will be in effect. The work is part of the north end neighborhood drainage project, which continues to make good progress with separate crews working on Third Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street and Sixth Street. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to complete this major project as quickly and efficiently as possible. City project managers and the contractor have spent the last couple evenings on the site of the Fourth Ward drainage project tracking the source of high-tide flooding along Haven Avenue. New check valves will be added to address the issue. The activation of pumping stations later this summer also will help. In a separate project, I have given permission to Cape May County to begin work at 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the intersection of 34th Street and Haven Avenue. Crews will be working on storm drain inlets, and the early start should allow the job to be complete by about 10 a.m. There are three more great shows on the Ocean City Music Pier this weekend. On Saturday, Imagination Movers perform a family-friendly, interactive rock concert. On Sunday, the Pier turns to a disco as the a tribute band joins the Ocean City Pops for “Classical Night Fever.” On Monday, the classic rock icons America play in the ongoing 2018 Summer Concert Series.
