Ocean City Mayor Gillian Says Public Works Making Great Progress Clearing Roads

  • News
Mayor Jay Gillian provided this latest update Friday afternoon in the aftermath of Thursday’s blizzard. I want to update you on our efforts to clear the streets after yesterday’s major snowfall. Our Public Works team has been working around-the-clock and made great progress under extremely challenging conditions. Due to the low temperatures, the snow is not melting, and the piles have to be removed – like the beach sand on the streets after Sandy. We have every staff member and every plow working, and we’ve now hired an outside contractor to bring in six dump trucks and additional equipment to help out. If at all possible, please try to limit your travel to make room for our crews to work. You also can help by not pushing snow onto a cleared street as you shovel out and by parking cars as close as possible to the curb.
The emergency routes and north-south avenues are in good shape. The fleet will continue to work through the night and for as long as it takes to clear all other streets and alleys. The Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center will open at 2 p.m. today (Jan. 5) and the Ocean City Free Public Library will open at 9 a.m. tomorrow (Jan. 6). The Ocean City Civic Center is available for open play until 5 p.m. today. Be cautious in shoveling out your properties, and please look after your neighbors. The storm left some areas with more than a foot of snow. (Courtesy Tim Kelly)
