Mayor’s update: February 2

  • News
Dear Friends, A path down the full length of the Ocean City Boardwalk reopened this afternoon. Pedestrians, runners and bicyclists are no longer being detoured, and access to businesses is restored. The project to reconstruct the boardwalk between 10th Street and 12th Street is nearly complete, but work continues on the side closest to the ocean. Crews are still re-installing railings and lampposts, completing a new pavilion near 12th Street and doing finish work. Please use caution in this area until the project is fully complete. I’m happy that work remains ahead of schedule. When it’s done, the entire substructure and decking of the boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street will have been rebuilt. The boardwalk is an important part of what makes Ocean City unique, and it’s reassuring to know that the heart of the structure will be strong and safe for decades to come. The inbound lanes of 34th Street between Bay Avenue and Central Avenue will be closed in the coming weeks as South Jersey Gas conducts a gas main renewal project. Cars coming into Ocean City will have to turn left or right onto Bay Avenue. When combined with the county’s bridge redecking project and the nearby Fourth Ward neighborhood drainage project, travel in this area will be frustrating. Please be patient as this work continues and, if possible, seek alternative routes. As always, we’re trying to complete as much infrastructure work as possible before the summer season. See
more information and maps on the South Jersey Gas project. Crosswalk and sidewalk work on the 800 block of Asbury Avenue is also ongoing, but businesses remain open. Please remember to shop local, and if you’re bringing food to a Super Bowl party, consider sharing a treat from one of our Ocean City establishments. The lights on the Route 52 causeway are green in support of the many Philadelphia Eagles fans in town. I hope it’s a great game and remember to drive safely over the weekend. Warm regards, Jay A.
