Mayor's Update: Sept. 23, 2016

careyfieldribboncutting1-4Dear Friends, I’d like to remind everybody that Atlantic City Electric will be performing restoration work next week. The utility company anticipates rolling 30-minute outages for many downtown and north-end areas on Tuesday (Sept. 27) between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The interruptions will be an inconvenience, but they are necessary to ensure improved and reliable service. See more information and a map of locations. This morning, more than 2,000 Ocean City School District students of all ages joined me for a ribbon-cutting at Carey Stadium to celebrate the opening of the new artificial turf field. I am grateful for the support of the community and would  like to thank City Council, city team members and all the school officials who helped make this important project a reality. The new surface is getting great reviews from all of the students who have used it already. The field will be home to a variety of school and community teams and a venue for many special events in Ocean City. I’m confident it will be a great community resource for years to come. The temporary road to “Site 83” off Roosevelt Boulevard is now complete. The road will allow trucks to haul material away from the disposal facility to make room for substantial new dredging projects on Ocean City’s bay side. Work should begin there within the next few weeks. The current dredging project at Snug Harbor, Glen Cove and South Harbor is making good progress. Work at Snug Harbor is complete and crews were expected to finish at Glen Cove today. That puts the entire project ahead of schedule. These are small projects, but they’re part of our ongoing commitment to making all Ocean City waters navigable. Finally, I’d like to encourage everybody to take advantage of a full weekend of events here in Ocean City, including the Walk for the Wounded, Ocean City Airport Festival, OCNJ Half Marathon, Boardwalk Aerobatic Airshow and the MS City to Shore Ride.
See more information on these events (and a full schedule for the air shows). Ocean City does not anticipate any problems, but in this day and age, you can never be too careful. Extra police and fire patrols, and CERT volunteers will be on hand. And we ask anybody who notices anything suspicious to call the non-emergency police number at 609-399-9111 or to flag down an officer. Fall is officially here, and I hope everybody has a great weekend. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor
