Mayor's Update 9-16

  • News
* This is a copy of the Mayor's weekly update that we failed to release on Friday 9/16. Dear Friends, On Wednesday, I announced a town hall meeting to share ideas for the Ninth Street corridor in Ocean City. I want to encourage everybody to attend the meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the main auditorium of the Ocean City Tabernacle. We currently have some unique opportunities to turn dilapidated properties at the city’s gateway into open space or some other public use. Chances like this don’t come up too often, and I want to make sure Ocean City comes up with the best possible plan with the full input of all citizens. As it is now, the first thing people see when they cross the Ninth Street Bridge is abandoned gas stations. Wouldn’t it be nice to see green open space and a welcoming entrance to our town? The meeting will include a presentation outlining where we’ve been with our efforts to beautify the gateway and what opportunities are available. This is a chance to learn all the facts and to see where we are at this time. The meeting is also designed to solicit questions, concerns and suggestions from the public. One of the things I’ve asked the city team to do whenever they tackle a new project is to look at the whole – to address all potential problems and improvements while the opportunity is there. So I’d like to ask everybody to bring questions and suggestions for the full length of Ninth Street -- from bay to boardwalk. I’d also like to remind everybody that demolition of the firehouse at 29th Street is expected to begin next week. In the meantime, the Fire Department has set up a temporary station near the Ocean City Municipal Airport. You may have noticed the trailer and equipment off of Bay Avenue near the airport parking lot. The establishment of this station will ensure that firefighters and EMTs continue to provide the same superior response times to all residents in that part of town. A new fire station is expected to be complete by next summer. If you’re a car buff, remember that the annual Corvette Show is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18. Models from every year the Corvette was manufactured will be on display on the boardwalk between Sixth Street and 14
th Street from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. I also invite everybody to join the Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday morning. Registration for the 10 a.m. walk opens at 9 a.m. at the Sports and Civic Center (6th Street and Boardwalk). There will be an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m. I hope you have a great weekend. September is always a great month in Ocean City. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor Check on the latest project updates and sign up for email alerts.
