Mayor's Update July 8

Mayor Jay Gillian

Gillian-Chamber Dear Friends, We’re heading into the heart of summer in Ocean City, and that means a lot of people are on foot, on bicycles and in cars traveling to enjoy the beaches, boardwalk and bay. I urge everybody to respect the rules of the road, so everybody remains safe. Drivers should remember to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. I ask pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers before moving out into the roadway. And bicyclists must respect stop signs and traffic signals in the same way cars do. These are all simple and common-sense measures, and they’re the law. They’re also a matter of courtesy. Following them will go a long way in ensuring the comfort and enjoyment of everybody in town for the summer. The Beach Boys are in town on Monday and Tuesday, and rumor has it that there are a few tickets left for each show. Check at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office on the boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. Character Night (Sunday), Mummers Night (Tuesday) and Family Night (Thursday) are in full swing. Downtown entertainment includes Funtastic Tuesdays and Market Days (both 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The popular Farmers Market is back on Wednesday mornings on the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’re also looking forward to Night in Venice a week from Saturday with a new bayside fireworks display as the finale. I’m happy to report that we’ve closed out a major road project on the bayside between 14th and 16th
streets. Baker Engineering is completing final design of a massive drainage project to help a flood-prone neighborhood between 26th Street and 34th Street, and we’ll likely be able to hold another public meeting before the end of the summer to share detailed plans. We’re also waiting on final permits the $8.7 million north end pump station project to serve the area between First Street and Eighth Street. Both projects could start by the end of the year. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor Check on the latest project updates and sign up for email alerts.
