A scrap heap and a small section of decking near Seventh Street are all that remain before work crews can begin demolishing the boardwalk substructure between Plaza Place and Eighth Street. Crews from Walters Marine Construction made quick work this week of removing boardwalk decking. After starting work Nov. 13, they have torn up the boardwalk surface between Plaza Place and Eighth Street in all but a small portion near the Seventh Street ramp. The work represents good progress in a project to demolish then rebuild a block and a half of the boardwalk. The project faces a mid-March deadline as the start of Ocean City’s spring events season starts early this year — with Easter falling on March 27. The work is part of the third phase of a multi-year reconstruction project that will replace the boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street.

A subcontractor reportedly has completed off-site construction of new sections of boardwalk decking, which can be transported and assembled after the boardwalk substructure is demolished and replaced. Runners, pedestrians and cyclists are being detoured off the Boardwalk at Sixth Street and Eighth Street as work continues. ***
