Weekend in Ocean City: Heart Walk, Triathlon, Jazz Concert

Participants in a previous Heart Walk on the Ocean City Boardwalk. The American Heart Association's annual Southern New Jersey Spring Heart Walk takes place Saturday, May 16 at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th Street off the Boardwalk. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. The Heart Walk is a family event through which participants celebrate their heart health, or recommit to taking better care of themselves. Each walker is asked to raise money through pledges to fund the research, education and advocacy efforts of the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. For more information call 609-399-6111. Other events happening this weekend in Ocean City: • The sixth annual Miles for Melanoma 5K run and walk will be held Saturday, May 16 on the beach at 34th Street. Proceeds from the race held the Melanoma Research Foundation fund research, education and advocacy for melanoma. Check-in and registration begins at 9 a.m., and the run/walk begins at 10 a.m. Registration is $30 for participants 18 and over; $20 for participants ages 6 to 17; and free for those 5 and under. . • The seventh annual Walk to End Lupus Now takes place Sunday, May 17 at the 6th Street practice field, off the Boardwalk. The goal of the walk is to recruit 1,000 participants and raise $75,000 to support 10,000 people living with lupus in southern New Jersey. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. For more information, call 856-517-5070, or visit www.walktoendlupusnowsj.org. • The OCNJ Triathlon/Duathlon will be held Sunday, May 17. The competition consists of a pool swim, running and biking, with courses for adults and children. Timed starts for the pool swim run from 6 to 8 a.m. Cost is $50 for the triathlon or duathlon, $25 for the kid's course. For information, call 609-399-6111 or www.ocnj.us/Race-Events. • On Sunday, May 17 the South Jersey Jazz Society presents the Larry McKenna Jazz Orchestra at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.
