Robby Krieger Brings Spirit of the Doors to O.C. Music Pier

Tickets are still available for the Robby Krieger show Monday on the Ocean City Music Pier. Photo credit: Joe Ancona When your singer has a personality as big as Jim Morrison’s was, it’s easy to be overlooked in a band as “just the guitar player.” But, Robby Krieger was much more than just the guitar player in the Doors. Krieger, now 69, wrote or co-wrote many of the Doors’ hits, including “Light My Fire,” “Love Me Two Times,” “Touch Me” and “Love Her Madly.” And his guitar playing — influenced by flamenco, folk, blues and jazz — gave the Doors a distinctive sound that helped the group stand out among all the great rock bands in the 1960s. The Doors ended when Jim Morrison died in 1971 of a drug overdose at age 27. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek died of cancer in 2013, leaving Krieger and drummer John Densmore as the only original surviving members. But, the group’s music lives on, and Krieger has never stopped playing the band’s songs. And on Monday, June 29 at the Ocean City Music Pier, Krieger and his band — with Krieger’s son, Waylon, on lead vocals — will take a drive through the band’s entire catalog, playing many of the Doors’ hits and possibly some deep cuts. At a show Friday, June 26 in Bethlehem, Pa., Krieger and his band played for nearly two hours, not only performing hits such as “Break on Through (To the Other Side),” but also touching on lesser-known songs in the Doors’ catalog, such as “The Changeling” and “Maggie M’Gill,” according to a review in the
Allentown Morning Call. Tickets are still available for Krieger’s 7:30 p.m. show at the Ocean City Music Pier are $38 plus applicable fees, and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Music Pier Box Office, 825 Boardwalk.
