Playland's Castaway Cove announced plans Tuesday to construct a major new roller coaster in time for the summer 2016 season. The 125-foot-tall GaleForce will feature a 64-mph launch and a beyond-90-degree drop as it winds its way on track over Playland between 10th and 11th streets on the Ocean City Boardwalk. __________

Prep work will begin earlier, but construction of the actual ride is expected to being Jan. 15 and be complete by April 15, 2016, according to Playland Vice President Brian Hartley. He said the ride was designed by Playland owner Scott Simpson, taking into account the space limitations of the boardwalk property. It features three vertical launches to help the ride sustain high speeds. The ride will be engineered and manufactured by S&S — Sansei Technologies of North Logan, Utah, the same company that built Playland's popular Double Shot ride. The ride will replace the Python Coaster and the Flitzer Roller Coaster near the 10th Street side of the amusement park, Hartley said. Another roller coaster and other rides still under design will be added near the GaleForce. Hartley said Playland has not determined yet how much GaleForce will cost to ride.
