International Surfing Day Festival Draws Big Crowd

  • Things To Do

Ocean City celebrated International Surfing Day on Friday with hundreds gathering on the beach at Seventh Street to celebrate the sport of surfing and help raise awareness about the importance of protecting the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

The South Jersey Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation hosted the event in Ocean City for the 10th year. This year it moved to Seventh Street from the beach at 59th Street, and Surfrider event organizer John Bonino said the move downtown helped draw more attention to the festival.

The event included an Ocean City Beach Patrol water safety class for kids, a beach cleanup, free surfing lessons, live music, sunset yoga and demonstrations of stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, a Hobie cat and other surf equipment.

The crowds enjoyed sunny skies, warm air, a warm ocean and small surf that was perfect for a lot of young (and old) new surfers to get stoked on the sport.
