Complete Smoking Ban on Boardwalk Up for Vote in Ocean City

  • News
City Council on Thursday will consider the first reading of an ordinance change banning the use of tobacco products on the Ocean City Boardwalk. A current ordinance restricts tobacco use to seven small smoking areas spread out across the length of the boardwalk. The ordinance was passed in 2003 after a report attributed 19 small fires in a three-year period to smoking. The amended ordinance would ban smoking on the entire boardwalk, including ramps and stairs, at all times. First offenses would be punishable with fines of $100 to $250. Fines for subsequent offenses would be $500 to $1,000. Councilman Scott Ping is the sponsor of the proposed ordinance. Thursday's City Council agenda also includes the second reading of an ordinance that would authorize the spending of $1.8 million to continue with the next phase of a multi-year boardwalk replacement project. The project calls for the use of southern yellow pine, but Councilman Mike DeVlieger asked for estimates on the use of tropical hardwood during the first reading of the ordinance on May 22.
