Work Is Underway to Repave Bay Avenue in Ocean City

  • News
A road and drainage project on Bay Avenue in Ocean City began Monday at 14th Street. Work began Monday to repave Bay Avenue between Sixth Street and 18th Street by summer. Traffic between Sixth Street and 18th Street has been detoured for much of the winter as New Jersey American Water Company (NJAWC) replaced water mains in advance of the repaving project.
NJAWC is still finishing its work between Sixth and Ninth streets, so the county's road and drainage work began at 14th Street. Asphalt Paving Systems of Hammonton has a $3.3 million contract to reconstruct storm pipes and drains, gutters, sidewalks and repave the road. When NJAWC finishes its work, road crews will begin with the section of Bay Avenue between Sixth Street and Ninth Street, Foster said. Work will then jump to the stretch between 18th Street and 14th Street and finish between 14th Street and Ninth Street. NJAWC still has work between 10th and 11th streets. Foster said that motorists can expect one lane of traffic to be open on Bay Avenue "most of the time" — with the exception of days when crews are running drainage pipes across the road. He said the project is expected to be complete by the middle of June. If the contractor does not finish, work would resume in the fall.
