Spring Swing Surf Contest Set for Saturday

  • Things To Do
Surfers take advantage of the early-spring swell in Ocean City. Registration is open for the Spring Swing Surf Contest 9 a.m. Saturday (April 26) at Seventh Street Beach. Early forecasts call for no major swell this weekend, but TheSurfersView.com is reporting a chance for a decent bump on Saturday. "
Despite the gorgeous spring weather we’re having, there will be no waves to ride until what seems like Saturday, when a projected S/SSE windswell will enter our region jumping the wave heights back up into the thigh to waist high range or so," the website reported on Tuesday. The "no wave date" for the contest will be Sunday (April 27). Divisions include: male age groups from 13-and-under to masters and over; longboard open; and women open. Entry fee is $10. Register online at www.ocnj.us/recreation under Recreation Activities. The event honors Don Pileggi for his many contributions to the Ocean City surfing community. Pileggi was a 1950 Ocean City High School graduate who later supervised the local Youth Center for eight years and worked for the Ocean City Recreation Department for 28 years.
