Ocean City’s Morvay-Miley American Legion Post 524 family (veterans, auxiliary and Sons of the Legion) is known for putting service before self, and taking care of others. This is especially true during these trying times of pandemic.

“During these past few weeks, our post has continued to support our community and local businesses,” said Ann Marie Maikner, auxiliary president.

“Thus far, we have provided lunches for the nurses at Shore Medical Center, the O.C. Fire Department, EMTs, Police Department, Public Works Department and the staff at AMI Radiology in Somers Point. Additionally, we delivered hundreds of pretzels to the staff and residents at United Methodist Communities — The Shores, where over thirty veterans reside,” Maiker also noted.

Next up, Post 524 members will provide lunches for 30 people in need through the OCNJ Care organization, as well as supply material to local residents who are sewing face masks for the elderly.

A thank you package is delivered to Shore Medical Center.

“The American Legion family is reaching out to as many members of the Ocean City community as possible to ensure that they are safe during this difficult time,” said Post 524 Commander Bob Marzulli.

Marzulli continued, “By teaming with local businesses, such as Blitz’s Caterers, we hope to give new meaning to the word ‘sustainability.'”

Legion members understand that taking care of others, especially veterans and their families, while maintaining a safe and healthy distance, is not always an easy task.

However, they hope that staying positive and busy helps everyone cope more easily.

“Just because we are at home doesn’t mean we can’t reach out to one another,” Maikner said. “Our goal is to bring optimism into everyone’s life right now.”

If anyone knows of an Ocean City family or organization that would benefit from the American Legion’s assistance, they are encouraged to call Ann Marie Maikner at (267) 588-5889.

Ocean City resident Debbie Burkert has been busy making masks for the community, including American Legion Post 524 members, as a way to give back.
