Downtown Asbury Avenue will be the site of the annual Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in Ocean City, NJ.
Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian announced today that the city’s annual Christmas Parade will be held on
Friday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
“Ocean City is a town based on history and tradition and our annual Christmas Parade is a family tradition that we feel needs to be continued," Gillian said in a prepared statement. “We are happy to work with the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Merchants to create a parade that every generation can enjoy and get in the holiday spirit”.
The parade will travel from from Sixth Street to 11th Street on Asbury Avenue.
The Downtown Merchants Association had considered canceling the parade for this year. The merchants' group organizes the annual event and had moved the tentative date to a Sunday afternoon (Dec. 7) to provide more of a draw to downtown stores and restaurants. But with the parade cancelled last year due to weather, attendance in recent years dwindling, and scheduling conflicts, the group considered taking a year off to re-energize the event.
The parade lineup will include Santa Claus, the Ocean City High School marching band, horse and carriage riders, police and fire vehicles, a showcase of the high school's champion athletes (including the South Jersey champion field hockey and boys' soccer teams), veterans, the Board of Realtors, pageant winners, possibly the recently honored Ocean City Primary School and Intermediate School students honored for perfect standardized test scores and other potential musical and community participants, according to Kristen Gallagher, director of Community Services.
