The "Off-Season" Pivot: Why May and October are the Best Months for Jersey Travelers

If you’ve driven home from the Shore on a Sunday afternoon in August, you know exactly how it goes. You’re sunburned in bumper to bumper traffic on the Parkway. And, somehow, you feel more worn out than when you left.

Traveling in peak season has a way of exhausting you. So why not go when the crowds have thinned out?

Rethinking "Off-Season"

“Off-season” is a word that the tourism industry uses. But you don’t have to.

As a local, you already know that the best time to be somewhere is usually when other people have decided not to go. The months of May and October aren't compromised. In fact, they’re months worth planning your vacation around.

Why May and October Hit the Sweet Spot

Both May and October land in a window with good weather - and when the crowds have cleared. However, hotels and other destinations are still open for business (and so much more accessible).

Better Weather Without the Crowds

May is lovely and warm without being brutally hot. You’re not fighting the August humidity that makes the Shore feel like a sauna, and you aren’t competing with half of Pennsylvania for a parking spot.

October is similar; warm enough to enjoy the outdoors with none of the summer chaos that made you want to leave in the first place. When the crowds start shrinking, travel also gets much easier.

Prices Drop, Quality Doesn't

Your hotel won’t get worse in October and your flight won’t be any shorter in May. Instead, what changes is how many people are competing for the same seat. That’s what moves the price up.

If you book in the shoulder months, you’re going to get the exact same trip for less (not a discounted version of it).

When the Shore Winds Down, Look South

Once your calendar flips past Labor Day, crowds start clearing and prices drop. And most Jersey locals know that October is “bonus summer”.

The End of OCNJ Season Doesn't Mean the End of Summer

Ocean City empties out pretty fast after the summer season closes, but the boardwalk in late September just hits differently.

You’ll have the whole island almost to yourself, which means fewer people and no waiting for a table. When the Shore winds down, though, the instinct to chase the warm weather somewhere else makes total sense.

Why Bermuda Makes Sense in October

Bermuda is just over two hours from Newark by plane, and the ocean stays warm well into October, usually sitting in the mid-to-upper 70s. The island’s busy season also runs through the summer, so by fall, the pricing starts to come down.

Bermuda cruise itinerary out the Northwest gets you nothing but warm water and cost-saving bonuses, without missing out on anything.

Before you lock anything in, though, be sure to run through the health checks you need to complete before a vacation. That way, you’ll know that nothing is going to disrupt your plans when you’re already there.

A Smarter Seasonal Travel Strategy

A lot of people book travel when the mood strikes, but you end up paying for that - financially and otherwise.

Picking out May and October and marking them as fixed travel windows means better prices and better availability. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about the last-minute scramble.

Travel Like a Local, Even When You Leave

As a local, your approach to the Shore applies everywhere. You want to show up when the timing is right, not when the calendar tells you to.

You’ve been doing it your whole life, right? Then there’s no reason to stop at the state line. Take your insider knowledge and apply it to every trip you plan.
