The search is on to replace Ocean City Superintendent of Schools Christian Angelillo, who is retiring June 30, 2026.
The Board of Education is taking steps toward its goal of selecting Ocean City school district’s next superintendent by April.
The board advertised the position immediately following Superintendent Christian Angelillo’s announcement in January that he will retire, effective June 30, 2026.
The full board conducted a preliminary screening of the candidate pool and discussed the search process in executive session during a special board meeting on Thursday. No action was taken.
“We are working diligently to choose a leader who embodies our district’s values and educational mission,” Board of Education President Kevin Barnes said in a news release. “Our ideal candidate will have a proven record of meeting the needs of all learners, setting high standards for faculty and staff, and supporting a robust and innovative curriculum.”
The school district serves approximately 1,700 students in grades pre-K-12 across three schools.
The superintendent job posting closed on Feb. 23, and board members are now focused on the timeline for two rounds of interviews and selecting the successful candidate:
Week of March 9: Board members will hold first-round interviews with the candidates.
Week of March 16: Board members will hold second-round interviews with the candidates.
Late March-April: Following the second round of interviews, the board will select the successful candidate and begin contract negotiations with the goal of approving the next superintendent at the April board meeting.
By April 30: The board approves the next superintendent and announces the appointment to the community.
July 1: Official first day of Ocean City’s new superintendent of schools.
Updates on the superintendent search will be posted on ocsdnj.org/.
