Why Bedsores Are a Major Warning Sign of Neglect

Elder abuse comes in many forms, including neglect. When placing your loved one in a nursing home, you expect that facility to provide suitable care that maintains his or her health and comfort. However, neglect is unfortunately common in nursing homes. While you cannot be by your loved one’s side for long periods of time each day to identify neglect, you can still spot the signs of abuse. Bedsores are among the most common indicators of neglect in nursing homes.

What Are Bedsores?

When a person’s body remains in one position for an excessive period of time, such as from sitting in a wheelchair or laying in one position, blood flow to that area is restricted. Inadequate blood flow may also be combined with things like poor circulation, malnutrition, moisture from poor hygiene, and friction. The result is a small ulcer called a bedsore. While bedsores are superficial initially, they can worsen. When this happens, they grow in size and depth. In fact, they can reach the muscle layer and even the bone.

What to Look For

When pressure against the skin persists for a period of time, that area of the skin will get warm and itchy. It may appear red and even bruised. Your loved one may feel pain when you touch the area. If the problem persists, the impacted area will develop a blister followed by an open sore. This will look like a pink or red wound. This then worsens into a deeper wound, and you may see a layer of fat in the wound. As the wound continues to worsen, the muscle, tendon, and bone may be visible. Ultimately, if left untreated, bedsores can lead to sepsis or osteomyelitis.

What to Do If You Suspect Elder Abuse

Nursing home neglect is a serious matter that can ultimately have fatal consequences for your loved one. There are several steps that you can take if you notice bedsores. If you see physical abuse or other criminal acts, it’s important to call 911. Your loved one should receive medical attention for the wounds as soon as possible. In addition to treating the wounds, medical care will document the injuries. You should also take photos of the injuries and any other signs of neglect. Take notes of all observations and conversations. If possible, communicate with the families of other patients in the facility. Learn about their observations and concerns.

After documenting the situation, you should contact several entities. First, reach out to the facility’s administrative office to file a report. Then, contact Adult Protective Services to report the situation. This agency will complete an investigation and pursue action as necessary. Your loved one has legal rights, and a nursing home abuse lawyer can help you learn about the rights and the actions available to seek recourse.

Bedsores can develop in a few hours, and they can progress to open wounds within a few days or weeks if the pressure against the skin persists. If you suspect nursing home neglect, it’s important to take action promptly.
