City Council Vice President Pete Madden is running for mayor in Ocean City's municipal election on May 12.
More than twenty years ago, I chose Ocean City as the place to build my life.
I did not grow up here, and I did not inherit a legacy. Like many who now call this town home, I came here with a belief in hard work, personal responsibility, and community.
I built a business and am raising four children here, becoming part of a town that gives so much to those who invest in it.
That experience shapes how I see Ocean City today.
First, I want to thank Mayor Jay Gillian for his 16 years of service. That level of commitment to public service deserves respect.
But Ocean City is at a crossroads, and there is real urgency in the decisions ahead.
We need thoughtful action, not just continuity. Growth must be managed responsibly across our entire community. That means allowing families to invest in their homes while protecting the charm and character that define Ocean City.
It also means making forward-looking decisions about our Boardwalk and other major projects that will shape our future. We can plan ahead and welcome investment without losing what makes Ocean City, Ocean City.
We also need to think bigger about what it means to be America’s Greatest Family Resort.
That is not just a slogan. It is a responsibility.
Ocean City should be a place where families across the region return to year after year, a destination people across America make a priority, and a community recognized well beyond our shores for the safety, cleanliness, and memories made here.
That takes more than a strong summer. It takes real investment in our reputation, in how we promote our town, and in how we support our small businesses.
We need to give people a reason to come back beyond July and August. Events, experiences, and opportunities should keep Asbury Avenue vibrant, our Boardwalk a centerpiece of family life, and our businesses open and thriving year round.
We also need a workforce to support that vision, with new ways to attract young people and workers so our shops and restaurants can stay open even in the quieter months.
We cannot assume families will keep choosing Ocean City. We have to earn that choice, year after year.
We also need to address challenges head on. At the beginning of our Boardwalk and across our community, quality of life matters. Residents deserve a mayor who listens, shows up, and takes action.
Leadership, to me, is simple. It is about getting the right people on the bus, putting them in the right roles, and moving in the right direction.
That means building a team that is accountable, transparent, and focused on results.
As a business owner, a father, and a member of City Council, I have seen how decisions at City Hall affect everyday life. Taxes, public safety, development, and quality of life are not abstract. They shape how we live.
The role of the mayor is not to divide, but to bring people together around a clear path forward.
We can honor our past while preparing for our future. But standing still will not be enough.
Ocean City has always been a place where people come to build something. Families, businesses, and traditions take root here. My story is just one of many.
Now it is about protecting that opportunity for the next generation.
That is why I am running for mayor.
