Mayor’s update on e-bike safety legislation

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian

Dear Friends,

I have been working with other mayors and Cape May County Commission Director Lenny Desiderio on finding ways to protect the safety of e-bike riders, and I want to provide an update.

N.J. Senate President Nick Scutari today announced a legislative initiative that would update the regulation, licensing, classification and training requirements for e-bikes. The proposed legislation follows through on many of the requirements and restrictions that we have requested. A summary of the proposed measures is available here:

I want to encourage you all to support this measure as it moves through the state Legislature.

As always, I also want to continue to urge parents to understand the potential danger of e-bikes in the hands of young riders. And I want to remind all adult e-bike riders that they must follow the rules of the road. While our police department is working hard to raise awareness and increase enforcement, you alone can make the biggest difference.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
