City Council has canceled its meeting that had been scheduled for Thursday night after it became clear there would not be a quorum among the seven-member governing body.
Travel and parenting commitments related to the New Jersey Education Association’s annual teachers convention in Atlantic City on Thursday and Friday meant that most of the members would not be able to make the meeting, Council President Terry Crowley Jr. said.
“We don’t have a quorum,” he said in an interview Wednesday.
A number of Ocean City councilmen have school-aged children and will be busy with commitments stemming from the NJEA convention, Crowley noted.
“It’s just one of those things. Everyone has family and kids and will be busy,” he said.
Crowley said he checked with the city’s chief financial officer Frank Donato and found out that no pressing business or bills needed to be approved this week by Council, which allowed the meeting to be canceled.
The next regularly scheduled Council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at City Hall.
Normally, Council meets twice a month on Thursdays at 6 p.m. on the third floor of City Hall. The meetings are open to the public and include opportunities for members of the public to address Council.
Starting in 2024, Council experimented with holding one of its monthly meetings at 10 a.m. and the other at 6 p.m. to give the public different options for attending the meetings.
However, it was decided to scrap the 10 a.m. start time earlier this year because some of the morning meetings were in conflict with the regular work schedules of the Council members. All of the meetings are now held at 6 p.m.
