Mayor's Message: Jan. 3

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian

Dear Friends,

I want to thank everybody who helped make our First Night and First Day celebrations such a success. It’s heartwarming to see so many families who want to be in Ocean City to start the new year and to see the streets and Boardwalk filled as if it’s summer.

I thank all of the volunteers and sponsors who pull together each year to put on these exceptional events. I also want to thank the committee members who started First Night and First Day and the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce for helping to sustain it over the years.

The events wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of the city team, which works long hours to make sure everything goes smoothly. I’m glad to see so many local businesses stay open to serve our guests through the holidays.

And finally, I want to thank all the people who came down to participate. We’re all looking forward to another great year in 2025.

I’m happy to report that we rededicated the Tony Mazzitelli Natatorium at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center this afternoon. We owe a lot to the Mazzitelli family for financial support that helped construct the pool in 1979, and the facility is named for a family member who loved the water during a life that was cut short by muscular dystrophy.

The rededication is a fitting tribute to Tony, and it’s good to see that so many people are enjoying the newly renovated facility.

I want to remind you that Christmas trees can be placed out for collection during regularly scheduled trash and recycling days throughout the month of January. Please make sure to remove all ornaments and decorations first.

Michele and I would like to extend deepest condolences to the Bradley family and Jim Bradley upon the death of his wife of 67 years, Marguerite. Marge was a friend and an important part of our community. She will be greatly missed.

And I just learned of the passing of Alex Kazmarck. Three generations of the Kazmarck family have been a vital part of our business community. Alex was the founder of the Surf Mall, now run by his sons, Wes and Chris. This is a great loss to our city, and I hope you’ll join me in paying tribute to his life and legacy.

Finally, I want to ask everybody to use caution on the roads this weekend. Light snow is in the forecast for tonight and Sunday into Monday. Our Public Works crews will be ready to clear the roads if necessary.

Stay warm and have a great weekend.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
