New traffic pattern for Roosevelt Boulevard during elevation project

Cape May County is preparing to raise the 34th Street-Roosevelt Boulevard entryway from the bridge, in background, to Bay Avenue for flood protection.

Cape May County has awarded a reconstruction contract for the raising and resurfacing of Roosevelt Boulevard, and the contractor anticipates starting work on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

The first phase of construction will be from the 34th Street Bridge to Bay Avenue, and work is expected to be complete by the end of May 2026.

A second phase will include 34th Street from Bay Avenue to West Avenue, along with several nearby intersections on West Avenue. The contractor has the option to complete this work in the fall of 2026.

The project is designed to mitigate the impact of flooding and enhance the safety of an important coastal evacuation route.

The roadway will remain open to traffic in both directions throughout the project, but traffic patterns will be affected or the duration of the project.

  • The initial work will include the removal of the concrete median just east of the 34th Street Bridge, along with the milling and paving of an area of shoulder to prepare for a lane shift in the next stage. This work will take place at night to limit the impact on traffic.
  • The next stage will include the installation of a concrete barrier along the existing centerline. One lane of traffic in each direction will then be opened south of the concrete barrier (where the two inbound lanes currently exist). That will allow construction crews to work on the north side of the concrete barrier.
  • The left turn lane from inbound Roosevelt Boulevard onto Bay Avenue will be eliminated. Motorists will be instructed to use West Avenue to turn left.
  • Pending relatively mild weather, the contractor anticipates being able to flip traffic to the newly constructed north side of the road in February and then complete the south side of the road.
A second phase of construction will include 34th Street from Bay Avenue to West Avenue, along with several nearby intersections on West Avenue.
