A fire broke out Friday night at a house in the north end of Ocean City, but all of the occupants were able to escape without injury.
Firefighters and police rushed to the scene at 104 Atlantic Ave. shortly before 11 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames shooting out from the second floor at the back of the house, according to a news release.
Fire hoses were used to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the Island Grill next door.
Island Grill posted a statement on Facebook thanking the Ocean City firefighters and first responders from neighboring towns for protecting the restaurant.
“Our neighbor’s house caught on fire, and it was immediately engulfed in flames. They quickly took control of the fire and kept our restaurant from the flames. Everyone is safe, especially our neighbors. A big heartfelt thanks again to everyone involved,” Island Grill said.
All of the occupants inside the house were able to safely get out. No firefighters were injured, according to the news release.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Ocean City Fire Department Investigation Unit, Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, Ocean City Police Department and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal’s Office.
