Ocean City has celebrated a flurry of ribbon-cuttings this year to mark the grand opening of new stores or remodeled businesses in the downtown, on the Boardwalk and in other parts of town.

In the latest grand opening, hundreds of shoppers gathered Friday to welcome the popular athletic apparel company Lululemon to Ocean City at 761 Asbury Ave., in the heart of the downtown business district.

Lululemon, based in Canada, is considered a national and international brand that has continued its expansion strategy to become a global presence with its retail stores.

The company sells athletic wear and other apparel, accessories, yoga mats, water bottles and other items. It also has its own compression and wick-proof wear.

Hundreds of Ocean City shoppers lined up around the block to check out what Lululemon has to offer following a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by store manager Laurie Sykes, Mayor Jay Gillian, members of City Council, representatives of the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and other members of the community.

Michele Gillian, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, thanked the Lululemon team for investing in the community. At the same time, she pointed out the growth in the downtown, from remodeled stores to new businesses opening up to make Ocean City “the place to shop, dine and enjoy.”

“Ocean City is proud to welcome another remarkable addition to Asbury Avenue – Lululemon,” Gillian said. “This exciting new store enhances our vibrant downtown, further strengthening the reach and appeal of our shopping district.”

Gillian noted that downtown Ocean City is home to 111 stores and restaurants that offer a unique blend of small-town charm and one-of-a–kind shopping experiences.

“It’s a highlight of the region and a true destination for residents and visitors alike,” she said.

While speaking with Lululemon officials, Gillian said they praised the beautiful decorations and “strong sense of community spirit throughout the downtown – calling it a hallmark location and the perfect fit for their brand.”

Reflecting the city’s business growth, the Chamber has hosted 26 ribbon-cutting ceremonies throughout town since March.

Mayor Gillian led the countdown for Lululemon’s grand opening, while Sykes used an oversized pair of scissors to cut the ceremonial ribbon. Customers then poured into the store.

Lululemon has moved into the storefront formerly occupied by Ron Jon Surf Shop at the corner of Eighth Street and Asbury Avenue.
