When the New Jersey Gynecomastia Center opened just over a year ago, it filled a major gap in men’s health care. Gynecomastia, or enlarged male breast tissue, is a condition that affects thousands of men across New Jersey, yet it is rarely discussed. The center was created to change that by offering a dedicated, judgment-free space for men to get the answers and solutions they need.
Now, a year later, the center has seen patients from all over the state and the tri state area. Whether it is a teenager dealing with hormone-related breast growth or a man in his fifties who finally wants to wear a T-shirt without feeling self-conscious, the demand has been consistent and deeply personal.
We sat down with the team at the New Jersey Gynecomastia Center to talk about the first year, what trends they are seeing, and what men need to know if they are considering surgery.
It has been a very rewarding first year. We have had the chance to help men of all ages and backgrounds who have been silently struggling with gynecomastia. What we did not expect was just how far patients would travel to come see us. Some drove hours because they could not find another practice that truly specialized in this condition.
More than anything, this past year has shown us how much this care is needed. For many men, surgery is not just cosmetic. It is something that affects how they see themselves, how they interact with others, and even how they dress each day. To be able to offer that kind of change has been incredibly meaningful.
There are three main groups of men we tend to see.
First, we see young men and teenagers who develop gynecomastia during puberty. For many of them, the breast tissue never fully goes away, and it causes a lot of social anxiety, especially in locker rooms or at the beach.
Second, we often meet athletic men who are in great shape but still have excess tissue or puffiness in the chest. Despite having low body fat and working out regularly, they struggle with a chest that looks soft or rounded.
Third, we treat older men who develop gynecomastia due to hormonal changes or medications. This group is often surprised by the physical changes and may not realize surgery is an option.
In every case, the concern is less about vanity and more about comfort, self-esteem, and wanting to feel like themselves again.
The results can be life-changing. Most patients walk away with a flatter, more sculpted chest that looks proportional to the rest of their body. The procedure often includes both removal of glandular tissue and liposuction to refine the shape of the chest.
Recovery is relatively quick, and scars are minimal when placed strategically around the areola or under the chest crease. Most men return to work within a few days and resume full workouts within four to six weeks.
What matters most is how patients feel afterward. Many tell us they finally feel comfortable taking off their shirt or buying clothing without worrying about how it will fit across the chest.
We have noticed that more men are becoming comfortable seeking help. A lot of them found us online, did their research, and decided it was time to take action. That growing awareness has been a positive shift.
Another trend is that more younger patients are coming in earlier. In the past, many men waited until their 30s or 40s to do something about gynecomastia. Now we are seeing high school and college-aged patients who want to get ahead of the issue before it affects their confidence in adulthood.
We have also seen a rise in patients who previously had surgery elsewhere but were unhappy with their results. These revision cases remind us how important it is to work with a surgeon who specializes in gynecomastia specifically.
It starts with a private, no-pressure consultation. We talk through your concerns, perform a physical exam, and review your medical history. Our goal is to understand whether your gynecomastia is glandular, fatty, or a combination of both, and then create a surgical plan that fits your goals.
We also take time to answer every question. Most men have been sitting with this concern for years, so we make sure they feel heard and informed before making any decisions.
Photos of past results can help patients visualize what is possible. We also discuss recovery expectations, cost, and next steps if they decide to move forward.
Surgery is the most effective and permanent solution, especially if glandular tissue is involved. In mild cases that are purely fatty, weight loss or targeted liposuction alone may help. But for true gynecomastia, where dense breast tissue is present, surgical removal is usually the only way to achieve a firm, flat chest.
We never push surgery unless it is the right choice. Some patients come in just looking for information, and we respect that. The most important thing is that they understand all their options.
Recovery is generally straightforward. Most patients return to desk work or light activity within two to three days. A compression garment is worn for a few weeks to reduce swelling and help the chest heal smoothly.
Some soreness and tightness are normal at first, but discomfort is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and follow-up closely to make sure healing is on track.
Patients can usually resume workouts, including chest exercises, after about four to six weeks. Final results continue to improve as swelling goes down and the skin adjusts to the new shape.
Yes, absolutely. We’ve had patients drive in from Ocean City, Margate, and other towns along the Jersey Shore. Many of them are active, beach-going men who want to feel more confident shirtless during the summer. For others, being in a swimsuit or even just a fitted T-shirt is a major source of anxiety.
We offer virtual consultations for those who live farther away, so they can get all the information they need without having to come in right away. That flexibility has helped us reach men throughout South Jersey and beyond.
Most patients say they wish they had done it sooner. The confidence boost is immediate, even while wearing the compression garment. They stand taller, feel more at ease in social settings, and stop worrying about what their chest looks like through their shirt.
The emotional impact can be just as powerful as the physical result. For many, this is the first time they have felt fully comfortable in their own body.
It is okay to be unsure. Many of our patients felt the same way at first. But taking that first step and gathering information can make a huge difference. A consultation is not a commitment to surgery. It is just a chance to understand your options and talk to someone who understands what you are going through.
There is no reason to struggle in silence when there are real solutions available. Whether you are just curious or fully ready, we are here to help you feel more confident in your body.
The first year at the New Jersey Gynecomastia Center has been filled with powerful transformations, honest conversations, and renewed confidence for men across the state. As awareness grows, so does the message that gynecomastia is nothing to be ashamed of and that help is available.
For anyone in Ocean City or elsewhere in New Jersey who has been considering surgery or simply wants to learn more, now is a great time to reach out. Whether it is your first consultation or a second opinion, the team is ready to meet you where you are with expertise, compassion, and a clear path forward
