More than 30 students and coaches of the Ocean City High School crew team were rescued by firefighters after several of their boats were blown off course and began to take on water.
No one was injured.
The rescue occurred at about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday in the bay waters off the Tennessee Avenue boat ramp, according to a Facebook post by the Ocean City Firefighters Association.
Altogether, 28 students and four coaches from the crew team were in need of assistance from the police and fire departments.
“Upon arrival, it was determined that due to a rapid change in weather conditions, several crew shells containing members of the High School Crew Team had begun to take on water and were blown off course,” according to the Facebook post.
Students and crew team members were rescued from the “growing hazardous conditions” by fire department personnel, the post said. They were taken to two ambulances, but it was determined that there were no injuries.
“A fast response and strong teamwork between departments led to a positive outcome for all involved,” according to the post.
