Ocean City Library Reopens; Patrons Excited to Return

Library Director Karen Mahar welcomes back library patrons.

The Ocean City Free Public Library reopened on Monday following a three-week closure due to renovations to the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems on the first floor.

Karen Mahar, library director, said that the HVAC system hadn’t been replaced since 1990, and staff and patrons alike were delighted to be back inside the first day.

“It hasn’t been the best system for several years,” Mahar said. “It was hot. We don’t have windows that open. It was much-needed work, and it was great being able to open for the public again today.”

Library-goer Judith Snyder was sitting and reading on the second floor Monday and said she was excited to return inside.

“It’s a great library. They always have several books that I’m interested in,” Snyder said. “It’s just wonderful to be back. I love it here.”

During the library’s closure, programming like book clubs and concerts continued. Books, CDs, DVDs, video games and other items could be reserved online or by phone, then obtained via curbside pickup.

Chromebook laptops and remote printing were accessible for those who typically utilize the library’s computer lab and printer, and free Wi-Fi remained available.

Mahar said while patrons could browse their selection online during the closure, many missed looking through the shelves in person.

“One of the main things people couldn’t do was browse the shelves,” she said. “That was a hard thing. They could browse online on our website and our catalog, but some people just like to come in and browse the shelves, and they couldn't do that.”

Mahar noted that while staff members weren’t allowed on the first floor during construction hours, they were able to obtain and have items ready for pickup within two days of reservation.

Library staff moved additional tables and seating into the atrium for studying and had two employees stationed both in the atrium and the hallway of the meeting room areas for any needed assistance.

Mahar said that the kind and helpful library staff and employees across the Ocean City Community Center made the process especially smooth.

Don Sobeck home-schools his 6-year-old son, Bo Tucker Sobeck, and utilizes the children’s section in the library as an educational space daily. While the renovations occurred, they were able to use a table in the atrium, but are ecstatic to be back in the children’s section.

“This is our school; we use it every single day,” Don Sobeck said. “During the renovation, we worked in the hallway, so we couldn’t wait to be back inside.”

“I’m excited to be back,” Bo Tucker Sobeck said.

While summer programming continued through the renovation, Teen Services Librarian Sara Bruesehoff said some programs that typically begin in September alongside schools were delayed due to limited meeting space.

Bruesehoff said attendees and staff are both excited for programs that begin this October, like the new Twilight book club.

“People have been smiling all day. There were people waiting outside to come in this morning,” Mahar said. “It’s a nice feeling to know that you’re loved and appreciated in your community. Our community really utilizes the services in our library.”
