So, to kick things off, what inspired you to get into web design Meath?
Cillian: Honestly, it was a mix of creativity and problem-solving. I’ve always loved design—whether it’s graphics or even interior design—but I also enjoy the technical side of things. Cillian: For businesses here in Navan or any smaller town, the focus should be on clarity, functionality, and building trust. A good website should be easy to navigate, have a clear message, and reflect the personality of the business. and their graphic design. A good example is making sure contact details are prominent—people want to know you’re approachable and local.

Cillian: It’s all about understanding the client’s goals. For example, a café might want to show off its menu and vibe, so we focus on visuals, ease of access, and maybe even online ordering. Cillian: I think the big difference is that I offer a really personalised web design service. I’m local, so I meet most of my customers face-to-face, and that makes a huge difference. I’m also a freelancer, so customers get my full attention—I’m not juggling hundreds of projects like a big agency might. That, combined with my focus on user experience and SEO, helps make sure their websites not only look good but also perform well in search rankings and for digital marketing.
Cillian: SEO is huge! Especially for local businesses. When people search for “cafés near me” or “plumbers in Meath,” you want your business to be one of the first things they see. I build search engine best practices into all my websites—things like mobile optimisation, fast load times, and using the right keywords. That way, clients don’t just get a beautiful site; they get one that actually helps their business grow.
Cillian: That’s a great question. Design and functionality should always go hand in hand. If a website looks amazing but loads slowly or is hard to use, it’s not doing its job. I aim to create websites that look clean and modern but are also super intuitive. For example, I always make sure buttons and menus are easy to find and use. It’s a mix of good design and solid user experience (UX) principles.
Cillian: I wouldn’t say I have one set style because every project is so different, but I do tend to lean toward clean, minimalistic web sites. I believe in letting the content speak for itself. That said, I always try to incorporate the client’s branding and personality into the site, whether that’s through color schemes, fonts, or specific visuals.
Cillian: Mobile responsiveness is crucial. More than half of web traffic comes from mobile devices now, so a site has to look and work just as well on a phone or tablet as it does on a desktop. I use responsive design, meaning the website adjusts to different screen sizes automatically. I also test everything—menus, forms, images—on various devices to make sure the user experience is smooth across the board.
Journalist: For businesses that might not have a big budget, how do you offer value?
Cillian: Not every business can afford a huge custom website, and that’s okay. I offer affordable website packages that still provide excellent value. These include things like a clean, professional design, basic search setup, and mobile responsiveness. I always focus on creating something that meets their needs without overcomplicating things. Sometimes a simple, well-executed website is all a business really needs to start making an impact.
Cillian: I think local businesses should keep an eye on voice search engine optimisation. More people are using devices like Google Home or Alexa to search for local businesses, so optimising for voice search—by using natural language in content and focusing on local SEO—is something that’s growing. Also, integrating online booking or ordering systems can be a game-changer, especially for restaurants, cafés, and service providers.
Cillian: First, I meet with the client—either in person or virtually—and talk about their goals. What do they want their website to achieve? Who’s their target audience? What’s their branding like? Are they looking for a brochure websites or e-commerce site? Once we nail down those details, I usually put together a couple of mockups and we collaborate on refining the design. From there, it’s about building the site and testing every aspect to make sure it’s flawless before going live.
Cillian: One of the biggest challenges is staying up to date with constantly changing technologies and trends. A website designer is always evolving, whether it’s new SEO rules, mobile updates, or design trends. I dedicate time every week to learning, attending webinars, and experimenting with new tools. Another challenge is balancing multiple projects at once, but I’ve developed a good system to make sure every client gets the attention they deserve.
Cillian: That’s a tough one! I worked on a website for a local coffee shop here in town, and that was a lot of fun. We incorporated their earthy, rustic brand feel into the design with warm colors and natural textures. We also added an online ordering system, which really helped them during the pandemic to sell across Ireland. Seeing how a good website can help a local business thrive is really rewarding.
Cillian: I think the personal touch is what sets me apart. Being based here in Navan means I understand the local market, and I’m able to build relationships with my clients when building our websites. They’re not just another project on a to-do list—they’re partners, and I want their business to succeed as much as they do. Plus, because I’m a freelancer, I’m more flexible, and I can work within a range of budgets while still delivering high-quality work.
