Why Won’t My 510-Thread Battery Charge?

If you’re a recent convert to vaping, there’s a good chance that you only own one 510-thread battery – and that’s a potential problem because it’s a single point of failure. Having a single point of failure means that if something goes wrong with that one component of your setup, you can’t vape at all. So, if you have a 510-thread battery that isn’t charging, we feel your pain and are going to do what we can to help you get back up and running. The good news is that in many cases, fixing a 510-thread battery that won’t charge isn’t actually too hard because it usually just means that a component needs to be cleaned or maintained. In this guide, we’ll walk you through it.

You Need to Clean Your Battery or Charger

One of the most important things to understand about troubleshooting charging problems with a 510-thread battery is that the battery can’t charge unless it has a solid connection with the charging cable. If anything prevents that connection from being made, the battery will either charge too slowly or won’t charge at all. To fix this problem, you’ll need to clean the battery and possibly the charger as well. The correct method for this depends on whether your battery charges through the threading or through a USB port.

  • If your vape battery is dirty and charges through the threading, it’s most likely dirty because a cartridge has leaked. Vape oil is extremely thick and sticky, so you’ll need to use rubbing alcohol to dissolve it. Get a cotton swab slightly moist with alcohol and twist it around in your device’s threading while pushing it down slightly. If the threading is contaminated with vape oil, the cotton swab will turn brown. Repeat this process with as many swabs as necessary until a swab comes out clean. It’s important to remember that a dirty battery can transfer oil to the charger, so you may have to clean the charger in the same fashion as well. Make sure that the battery and charger are both completely dry before you resume vaping.
  • If your vape battery is dirty and charges through a USB port, it’s most likely dirty because dust or pocket lint has gotten inside the port. In this case, you can clean the port with a toothpick. Don’t clean a USB port with a metal tool because the metal could scrape away the port’s fragile gold plating.

If your 510-thread battery begins charging after you’ve cleaned the threading or charging port, you’re all set – there’s no need to continue troubleshooting. If the battery doesn’t charge, the problem is something else. Continue reading for more tips.

Your Charging Cable Has Reached the End of Its Life

USB is a great technology that has become ubiquitous for device charging and data transfers. One downside of its popularity, though, is that you can find USB cables in just about every type of store – even many gas stations. Some cables are definitely better than others, but there have been some serious questions about the long-term reliability of USB cables even in the best of circumstances. In other words, if your 510-thread battery isn’t charging and isn’t dirty, there’s a good chance that using a different USB cable will fix the issue.

If your vape battery charges through the threading, replacing the cable isn’t quite so easy because your device’s charging cable is proprietary. It’s unwise to replace the cable with a generic charger from a local vape shop because you can’t be certain that the specifications are exactly the same as those of your device’s original charger. It’s always best to replace the charger for a vape battery with an identical charger made by the device’s original manufacturer.

You’re Not Using the Right Power Source

If nothing seems wrong with your vape battery and swapping out the charger doesn’t resolve the issue, you should consider the possibility that the power source you’re using is actually to blame. Here’s what you need to know about using a USB port to charge a 510-thread battery.

  • Your best bet is always to charge a vape battery with your computer because that’s what vaping devices are generally designed for. If your device doesn’t charge when you connect it to your computer, move the charger to a different USB port. If that doesn’t work, try using a different computer.
  • Don’t ever use the wall adapter for a smartphone, tablet or computer to charge a 510-thread battery. These types of chargers are designed for devices that support high amperage charging currents, whereas most vape batteries are designed to charge at a rate of 1 amp or even less. If you use a charger that doesn’t have the ability to step its amperage down on demand, it could cause the battery to overheat. The battery may not even charge at all.
  • If you do use a wall adapter to charge your 510-thread battery, make sure that the current delivered by the adapter is exactly what your vaping device is designed to receive. In most cases, a vape battery is designed to charge with a 5-volt, 1-amp current.

It Could Be Time for a New Vape

Were you able to get your 510-thread battery to charge by following the steps in this article? If so, you can probably look forward to many more months of trouble-free service. If not, though, it’s time to consider the possibility that your device isn’t charging because it has actually reached the end of its life. Before the device stopped charging, maybe you even noticed that its battery life wasn’t quite what it used to be. That’s often the first sign that a lithium-ion battery is approaching the point of failure.

If your 510-thread battery has reached the point of retirement, it’s time to buy a replacement from a well-regarded manufacturer like Rokin Vapes. Rokin stands behind their products with a generous warranty, so you can be confident that your new device will give you plenty of problem-free enjoyment.
