From Ocean City to the NFL: The Remarkable Journey of Doug Colman

One of the cool things about the NFL is that each player has their own story. We hear most about the five-star recruits, the first-round draft picks, and the players with the most potential. But the guys like Doug Colman have an interesting story in their own right.

The Doug Colman NFL journey is a unique story and one that bears going into.

Beginnings and college career. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Doug Colman NFL journey began at Ocean City High School’s football team. Colman was a threat on both sides of the ball, gaining 1,000 yards as a fullback while earning South Jersey Defensive Player of the Year at linebacker.

From there, Doug Colman went on to play with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. During his career, Nebraska would win back-to-back national championships in 1994 and 1995, both undefeated seasons.

Journey to the NFL. Colman’s versatility was valuable to the Huskers and garnered attention from scouts at the next level. That was good enough to get him drafted by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft.

Over the next five years, Colman bounced around a bit. After making it to the Super Bowl with the Tennessee Titans, he reached a pivotal point. The Doug Colman Browns experience included the practice squad but opened the door for a coaching career.

Colman would bounce around a bit longer, landing on the practice squad of the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets before calling it a career in 2001.

Coaching career. Doug Colman’s coaching career began at his alma mater, Ocean City High School. He became an assistant at Oakcrest High School before ultimately getting the head coaching job at Absegami High School in 2003.

After a successful stint in high school, he served as assistant linebackers and special teams coach during the final season for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. From there, he went back to Nebraska as a defensive quality coach, spending two years in the role.

Colman got a big break a few years later, being hired as the linebackers coach and assistant special teams coordinator at Coastal Carolina. In 2014, he joined the Houston Texans as a linebacker assistant, moving into a role with the Dallas Cowboys three years later.

In 2019, the Doug Colman Browns experience 2.0 happened when the team hired him as a special teams assistant coach. Colman spent three years with the Browns before transitioning out of the role.

At the end of the day, Doug Colman shows that you don’t have to be a top recruit to have a successful career. He won at every level, played in the NFL, and ultimately became a coach for both of his alma maters and one of his former NFL teams.
