The game has reached heights, from using a soccer ball initially to playing it in a specifically constructed and confined area. It has also gained popularity with the emerging spirit of famous basketball players.

This journey has turned the basketball game into a fast-paced and dynamic one. Let's explore the blog to learn about the evolution of basketball games.

What is Basketball?

Basketball is a team sport where two teams of five players try to shoot the ball inside the basket to score points. In basketball, each team tries to score by tossing the ball to the opponent's goal, an elevated horizontal hoop and a net called a basket. A field goal is worth two points unless made behind the three-point line. The winner of the game is the one who wins the most points at the end.

History of Basketball

Basketball games came into existence in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The invention by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith to create a less injury-prone sport when compared to football. He was just 31 when he made this indoor sport to keep the athletes engaged even during the winters. However, this random game has reached a great height and was popularized first in America and later in other parts of the world.

After gaining so much popularity, the game emerged and was established in colleges, which gained much fame from the players and supporters. As a result, it became a professional game. This resulted in the establishment of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1946. By the end of the century, it had become a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and basketball had become an integral part of American culture.

Early History-Invention of the Basketball Game

A game similar to basketball is mentioned in the book, which was published in the year 1591 and describes the customs of the coastal North Americans. The game is similar to basketball, where the ball must be thrown against a target woven from the twigs mounted high on a pole in the middle of the playing field. The person who hits the ball is rewarded if the target is being hit.

However, many people did not know the game then as it was not known by many. Later, it came into the limelight only when Dr James Naismith, in December 1891, invented it to keep young athletes engaged and warm during cold months of the year. However, he was a physical education instructor at YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In the beginning, the ball was like a soccer ball, but later, as the game evolved, the appearance of the ball also changed.

Game Format

Naismith tried this game for the first time by dividing his class of eighteen people into nine players on each side and teaching them the basic rules of the game, which he had set for the game. He made them understand that the game's objective was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. However, whenever a point was scored, the warden could bring a ladder and retrieve the ball. However, the fruit baskets were removed in the end.

Original Naismith's Rule

Naismith published 13 rules for the new game, which were later changed but are the original versions of the first basketball drills and rules.
