OCHS Baseball Falls Short in Playoffs

By DREW FASY Delsea Regional High School rallied from a six-run deficit to top Ocean City, 10-9, in the quarterfinal round of the South Jersey Group 3 baseball playoffs. Ocean City started the game with strong pitching by Travis Large and hot bats in the first three innings, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Evan Taylor had a solo home run in the first inning for the Red Raiders. Ocean City followed up with four runs in the second inning off of five hits and an intentional walk. Eddie Wisham and Colin Thompson had clutch RBI singles during the second inning for the Red Raiders. Then Cam Street led off the third inning with a solo home run. However, Delsea's offense responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with seven runs to take a 7-6 lead.
Ocean City starting pitcher Travis Large on the mound. The sixth inning was action packed, with Ocean City scoring three runs on hits by Cole Laursen and a two-run homer by Evan Taylor. But Delsea took advantage of scoring opportunities in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to take the lead for good, 10-9. Delsea moves on to the semifinal round of the tournament and will play No. 1 seed Cherry Hill West on Friday. Delsea lost to Mainland Regional in the 2023 Group 3 South Jersey championship. They entered the 2024 tournament ranked fourth with a 22-3 record. The Crusaders beat Toms River South, 8-1, in the opening round. Ocean City, seeded fifth in the tournament, had a 17-7 record during the season. The Red Raiders beat Cumberland Regional, 4-1, last Thursday in their opening round playoff game at home.
