Ocean City Hires New Intermediate School Principal

  • News
By MADDY VITALE In September, students in the Ocean City Intermediate School will see a new principal. Former Intermediate School Principal Mike Mattina took a position in the Hammonton School District, opening up the position for another longtime educator to lead the school, Matthew Engle. The Board of Education approved Engle’s contract at its meeting June 20. He begins in the district July 1 at an annual salary of $122,000, according to the district meeting agenda packet. Engle comes to the district from neighboring Upper Township, where he worked in an administrative role. Prior to that, he was a musical instructor there and in the Hammonton School District, Interim School Superintendent Terry Crowley Sr. said during the school board meeting. Crowley noted that the district is “looking forward” to working with Engle. Engle addressed the board, saying he was excited to begin his new position. “I am extremely excited and honored to be joining the Ocean City School District. I’ve been in education for 15 years,” he said, noting that he has spent the last six years working in the Upper Township School District. “I am excited to join the tradition of excellence that you guys have here in Ocean City, not only in academics, but also extracurricular and co-curriculars. I am excited to be a part of that, and also to look at how we can expand that into the future.”

I look forward to working with the administration, the students and you guys as we move forward.” In addition to a new Intermediate School principal, the school board hired a new director of special education services, Jacqueline Kulinski. Kulinski will begin her role with the district on July 1 at a salary of $140,000. Prior to accepting the position in Ocean City, Kulinski worked in the Buena School District, Crowley said, adding that he is pleased with the addition of Kulinski in the district. Kulinski, a mother of twins who are in fifth grade in Ocean City, said a few words about beginning her new position. “I am super-excited to be starting in Ocean City,” she said. “I have been in special education for almost 20 years now. I look forward to working with you and getting to know all of you.” In addition to the new hires, Crowley said that the district staffing is nearly complete, aside from possibly one coaching position available. “All of our people will be in place for the fall. We are good,” Crowley said, adding that the summer programs and all teaching staff are in place. New Schools Superintendent Christian Angelillo, of Beach Haven in Ocean County, will begin in the district on Aug. 1. Angelillo was given a five-year contract in Ocean City when he was hired in March. He was originally expected to begin in June. However, school board officials explained at the meeting that Angelillo could not leave his current employment in the Boonton Township School District in Morris County until August.
