Easing moves: Welcoming your pet into their new home

Moving to a new country can be an exhilarating yet nerve-wracking experience at the same time – more so when this move includes your precious fur baby. This is precisely why we recommend pet parents to prioritize care, comfort, and ease before onboarding relocation adventures.

From health checkups to obtaining relevant permits, paperwork to bookings, and beyond, pet relocation in Dubai may seem daunting to a first timer, but with the right guidance, support, and expertise, trust this move to be as simple and stress-free as can be! If you’re wondering how, you can uncomplicate your move, we’ve got our top four tips especially for you.

Begin by meeting with your pet’s healthcare provider

Before you book your jet and hop on your big adventure, our advice is to take your fur child for a quick checkup. This step is essential to ensure that he/she is fit to fly, has all the relevant vaccinations required to travel, and is in general doing well. Furthermore, visiting your vet also enables you to address any concerns or queries you might have about your pet’s general health, settling in, and the quickest way to secure a health certificate, too. Alternatively, you could always simplify this a step further by onboarding an expert pet relocation agent to guide you through the steps, connect you to reliable vets, and apply for any documentation that your pet might require.

Pack up their essentials

To take, or to buy – is generally the question a lot of moving pet parents find themselves asking. Want our vote? Your pet is sensitive to anything that is familiar – whether it’s his/her environment, surroundings, toys, or anything else – which is what makes prepping pet relocations quite challenging, especially when downsizing to move lighter into a new country. While you can freely make a call on the larger objects, we recommend that you pack a majority of your fur child’s favourite toys, bedding, and any blankets that they find comfort in. This would help them acclimatize to their new environment while keeping them close to familiar objects that they find comfort in.

Goes without saying, but make sure that you pack in the following essentials:

  • A certificate of origin for your pet, unless it’s a GCC native, a cat, a falcon or a dog relocation from Dubai or other emirates
  • A copy of the pet import permit from the destination country unless the pet is a companion/service animal.

Cats and dogs residing in the UAE must comply with the following health requirements:

  • Your pet must have obtained a veterinary health certificate from the ministry before leaving the country.
  • Identified by microchip
  • Accompanied by an authorized veterinary certificate issued by the competent authorities in the destination country.

Next, after the move, introduce them to their new environment

As pet parents, the relocation process doesn’t end at the arrival at a new place. No way! This is just the beginning of a brand-new chapter, which is why it should be done with utmost care, compassion, and most importantly, patience.

Our advice is to help them get outside and help them explore their new surroundings! Start slow by taking them for regular walks around your new neighbourhood – this will help them settle it and get familiar. If you find them curiously staring at corners, or pathways – let them explore. This behaviour is positive and will help them feel more in control of where they are.

But hold on, that’s not the only ‘new’ for your little pet! Your fur child will also need time to sniff and explore your new home, each room, and possibly every little corner. Remember, it is critical for you to ensure you don’t overwhelm your pet with too much information at one go; introduce them gradually and give them plenty of time to adjust.

Turn up those pawsitive vibes

Relocating can be a rollercoaster of emotions for your fur child, during which, especially the immediate transition period, you’d have to practice being extra sensitive to your pet’s emotional needs. Pay attention to their body language, eating behaviours, and hydration patterns, while ensuring that you offer reassurance through gentle words and lots of cuddles.

Remember that your pet’s emotional well-being is just as important as their physical comfort, so if you find them getting stressed, or seeming anxious, don’t hesitate to offer treats or toys to calm them down.

As we come to an end, we promise that we understand your apprehensions as pet parents ourselves – because let’s face it, no move is easy - especially for our precious pets, which is why we strongly recommend investing in a stress-free, happy adventure through proper planning, expert guidance, and a professional pet relocation agency!

Following these easy steps and prepping ahead for the relocation of pets to Dubai or Pet relocation Abu Dhabi, can help you to create a happy and healthy home for your precious fur children.
