Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe that Labor Day Weekend is here. Summer always passes by too quickly.
The first day of school is on Tuesday, and I’d like to welcome back all students, teachers and school personnel. The start of a new school year is always an exciting time. Please use caution on the roadways next week as school buses, bicycles and pedestrians return for the daily school commute.
I’d also like to welcome Dr. Christian Angelillo, our new superintendent of the Ocean City School District. Dr. Angelillo brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the district, and I’m looking forward to continuing a great working partnership with the schools.
Ocean City is lucky to have such exceptional schools, and our kids have always excelled in academics, the arts and athletics. Congratulations to the Red Raiders varsity football team. They won big in the season opener yesterday at the Battle at the Beach at Carey Stadium. Good luck to them and to all of Ocean City’s teams as they start their new seasons in the coming weeks.
Ocean City was fortunate to escape much of the excessive heat that hit the mainland earlier this summer, so it was surprising to hear from so many residents about extremely high electricity bills this summer. I would like to join our local legislators, including U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, state Sen. Mike Testa, and Assemblymen Antwan McClellan and Erik Simonsen, in calling for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to investigate these increases.
The Ocean City Free Public Library will be temporarily closed starting on Tuesday. The heating and cooling system is being replaced, and it’s not safe for the public to be in the facility during construction. The work is expected to be complete within three weeks. In the meantime, curbside pickup will be available and the library’s meeting rooms will remain open. More information is available at oceancitylibrary.org.
The major renovation of the pool at the Aquatic & Fitness Center continues to make good progress. Work on one of the key elements of the project, the replacement of main drainage system under the pool, is underway, and new pipelines will be installed next week.
I hope you all get a chance to enjoy all that Ocean City has to offer over the holiday weekend and have a great time with family and friends.
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
