Fuji Bikes donated three electric bikes and the local Tuckahoe Bike Shop contributed another one to the Ocean City Community Policing Unit.

The Community Policing division of the Ocean City Police Department routinely patrols on foot and by bicycle, and the new e-bikes will help officers cover more ground. The unit will also use the new e-bikes to launch an educational and safety campaign at Ocean City schools.

“I want to thank Fuji and Tuckahoe Bike Shop for their generous donations,” Mayor Jay Gillian said in a news release. “I also want to thank our new chief, Bill Campbell, and the entire Community Policing Unit for their help in starting this important campaign. Safety on our roadways will always be a top priority.”

Officers are working to arrange presentations at the Ocean City Primary School, Ocean City Intermediate School and possibly at Ocean City High School's driver education courses.

They will use the e-bikes for demonstrations and to emphasize the importance of wearing helmets and following all the rules of the road.

The campaign also will include increased enforcement along routes that young e-bike riders use to commute to school.
