Talk about a show to beat all shows. Judy Collins, whose folk music and songwriting have kept her relevant since the 1960s while entertaining audiences all over the world, will join the Ocean City Pops Orchestra for a performance on Sunday, Aug. 6 at the Ocean City Music Pier.
The show is being done jointly between the city and BRE Presents, Bob Rose and Rocky Mountain Productions. The concert is part of a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the BRE Presents and Bob Rose Productions concert series.
On Thursday, City Council is expected to approve a resolution for the contract to add Collins' performance to the long list of summer entertainment.
Collins, a Grammy Award-winning recording artist, is most famous for her hit “Send in the Clowns” from her album “Judith” in 1975. Some of her other successes were with songs such as "Someday Soon," "Amazing Grace," and "Cook with Honey."
Fans will hear some of Judy Collins' major hits.
Michael Allegretto, aide to Mayor Jay Gillian, noted that adding Collins to the lineup with the OC Pops will make for a phenomenal show.
“Judy Collins has performed with orchestras all over the country and will be a great addition to the 2023 season to the Ocean City Pops,” Allegretto said Tuesday. “We thought that it would be fun to do a joint show with Bob Rose. We discussed it and we felt Judy Collins would be a perfect fit because she has done orchestra shows in the past.”
Allegretto said for fans to expect Collins to perform some of her hits, such as “Send in the Clowns.”
“Certainly, she will be singing some of her hits from over the years and sprinkling in some of her orchestra songs that she normally wouldn’t be playing with the band,” he said.
This is not the first time the 83-year-old star of folk music has performed at the Music Pier. Collins, who began playing music festivals in the 1960s and continues to today, performed at the Music Pier most recently in 2021.
Collins played in a joint show with Richard Thompson in June of 2021.
“She’s always been a great entertainer and her performances always bring out a great audience, especially in Ocean City,” Allegretto said. “I certainly feel that our regular audience for the Pops is going to love the show.”
